#IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Let’s Accelerate Action.” The World Economic Forum estimates that, at the current rate of progress, we will not achieve full gender parity until the year 2158. This statistic is sobering, especially in light of the recent Executive Order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” and the termination of federal employees in an attempt to “reduce” government waste.

Additionally, the temporary halt of National Science Foundation grants to organizations that promote diversity has impacted our partnership with Howard University. However, the attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion has consequences that go beyond funding; it influences who is willing to support and advance our work. Since our organization is called the Women’s Institute for Science, Equity, and Race, a long-time mentee has declined to use me as a reference. This was disappointing, but I understand their decision.

A Rose by Any Other Name

I have been asked whether I plan to recommend to the Board that we change our name. I have thought about it.  Most people don’t realize that our social media name, “WISER Policy,” is not our official name; rather, it reflects our goal of creating wiser, more effective public policies. I understand that changing our name would not alter our mission, but it might lead some to question my commitment to that mission.  I take pride in representing the women “between the commas.”

Therefore, for now, the answer is no.

So this #IWD2025, the Women’s Institute for Science, Equity and Race asks that you join us to #AcclerateAction by committing to one of the following.

  • designing and building infrastructure meeting the needs of women and girls
  • helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health
  • involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security
  • providing women and girls with access to quality education and training
  • elevating women and girl’s participation and achievement in sport
  • promoting creative and artistic talent of women and girls
  • addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls

I’d also like to thank you for your support.
