Data and Storytelling

WISER advocates for a society where policy research addresses the economic, social, cultural, and political well-being of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women

Our Vision

An inclusive society where policy research addresses the economic, social, cultural, and political well-being of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women.

The design of our website reflects our commitment through our carefully chosen colors, each representing a core value that guides our work.

Our Mission

Our goal is to disseminate research that influences public policy and promotes equity across multiple dimensions of society.

Equitable Access

  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education
  • Health care, employment, housing, and legal representation

Equitable Access

  • Employment – earnings, compensation, and promotion
  • Family structure – parental rights and marital status
  • Health outcomes – reproductive rights, mental health, coverage
  • Penal punishment and criminal justice

The Challenge We Address

Inequality Hides in the Aggregate

Research on women often does not disaggregate data findings by race, ethnicity, and gender. We posit that failure to disaggregate gender data by race/ethnicity is biased and treats White women as the "norm."

Additionally, using the term "women of color" is problematic, as it wrongly assumes that Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women are a homogeneous group.

Biased Research Methods

Failure to disaggregate race/ethnicity data by gender treats men as the "norm" and obscures women's unique experiences.

Ineffective Policies

This aggregated approach produces ineffective policies that fail to address the unique needs of the most vulnerable.

Our Approach

When research on women includes nonwhite women, the results are often limited to Black and Hispanic women and are presented using a deficit frame; hence, the findings are centered on White women.

Comprehensive Analysis

WISER's research considers the influence of socioeconomic status on outcomes. When data allows, we examine the impact of family status (single vs. married), presence of children, educational attainment, and other factors that may affect well-being.

Data Disaggregation

We believe disaggregating data will identify nuances in outcomes and unmask the inequality that hides in aggregate data.

Expanding Women-focused Research

Research & Analysis

WISER conducts and disseminates research on the well-being of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women.

Policy Analysis

We conduct policy analysis to identify and minimize disparate impact to Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women.

Policy Proposals

We propose public policies that are inclusive of the needs of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American and Multiracial women.

"We believe that the well-being of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous American, and Multiracial women is crucial to economic progress."

WISER's Founding Principle

Advocating for WISER Public Policy

WISER advocates for the disaggregation of data by the characteristics lived experiences and research have shown to influence an outcome.

We believe that disaggregating data in this way will identify nuances in outcomes and unmask the inequality that hides in aggregate data. Such an approach can help create a society with effective policies that are inclusive of the needs of these vulnerable groups.

    Data-Driven Solutions

Our research methodology reveals patterns hidden in traditional aggregate analysis, leading to more effective policy interventions.

Targeted Impact

By focusing on specific demographic groups, we create policies that address real needs rather than assumed similarities.
